Inconsistent keyboard backilght state

Hi,

The keyboard backlight state on boot is inconsistent on my EVO 15 running Slimbook OS GNOME, especially if its charge state changes in between boots. Sometimes it boots with the keyboard lit up, but sometimes it's off. Note that I always have the backlight on when using the laptop, so it always shuts down in an on state.

Even weirder : when it boots with the lights off, it then requires two presses of Fn+F7 to actually turn it on. The first press does nothing, and the second one brings it to the dimmest of the two settings. Afterwards, using the key combination works as expected and cycles between the three states with just one press.

I've tried to look online for settings to force the state to on by default in software, and everything seemed to point back to the leds present in /sys/class/leds
I tried every device listed there with commands like :

echo 0 | sudo tee /sys/class/leds/input3\:\:numlock/brightness

and this one  works, it changes the state of the numlock LED without changing the actual numlock state (the two become coherent again simply after pressing the numlock key twice)Unfortunately, I tried every led listed in /sys/class/leds but none of them changed the keyboard backlight. I know the Fn+F7 keypress is at least received by the OS since I get the little OSD icon showing up.

Is the keyboard backlight control somewhere else ?

Thanks

HI, here is the full system info https://imgur.com/a/PqZknab

The BIOS and EC should be up to date as I reflashed them not long ago and didn't get any update notification since.

Is there a way to control the backlight in software ? Surely the OS can "see" it since the OSD popup show up when I cycle between modes.
If it is I could at least script it to turn on at boot as a workaround.

Thanks

Good morning,

Which versions of the BIOS and EC do you currently have installed on your system?

As a general rule, the previous keyboard backlight settings are not retained.

Best regards,

Yes the module is loaded. The keyboard backlight mostly works, I can cycle through the states with Fn+F7 and the OSD indicator show up when doing so.
The only issue is on boot where the previous state is lost and it sometimes takes two presses of Fn+F7 to actually turn on.

Dear Leonito,

first of all please can you check in your slimbook service app if in the line "Module Loaded" is set to "yes":

If not please reinstall slimbook service, this install has the necessary drivers for you backlight control:

Same thing, the package is unknown. Looking at the output of sudo apt search slimbook nothing seems to be related to the keyboard backlight. The only thing keyboard-related is slimbook-rgb-keyboard but the EVO only has a monochrome white backlight so I doubt it would help.

mmmmm... try this:

sudo apt install slimbook-kbd-backlight

and then:

slimbook-kbd-backlight -b 2

the final number is:

  • 0: apagado

  • 1: bajo

  • 2: medio

  • 3: alto

Hi, this package does not seem to exist (I do have the slimbook sources installed for apt).

    Hola,

    sudo apt install slimbookfn
    sudo systemctl enable --now slimbookfn

Después reinicia y observa si mejora el comportamiento.
