Configuration of a new Evo 14''

Avatar

I have just bough a new Evo 14'' with AMD Ryzen AI9 365, Slimbook OS Gnome [Ubuntu]. I'm comparing its behavior with my old computer with Ubuntu.

So far I have only upgraded and followed the advice of Evo computers https://slimbook.com/en/blog/guides-2?tag=evo-112 the AMD GPU one, and some superficial changes (no app install beyond the one about GPU AMD top).

I have noted some differences between laptops and I would like to understand what needs to be modified to match the behavior, (Sorted from most important to less important):

-  I have two docking menus. One shows the battery and the caps, and the other one doesn't show all those icons. On settings, "Ubuntu Desktop" doesn't show the Dock section. How to disable the one without battery icons, slimbook icon, IUlauncer, ...?

- Buttons like locking don't work with FN + F2 (lock), FN + F6 (disable touchpad ), FN + F5 (speed/power mode ?). What might interference with it and how could I activate those remaining shortcut?

- slimbook button (Super?) between the Fn and Alt button, doesn't open any window, search apps or any other visible behavior. How can I make it work as the Super key? The keyboard identified (Catalan (spain, with middle-dot L))  doesn't show even the left Ctrl Fn or Alt buttons. I found I could use https://github.com/rvaiya/keyd to map some keys but in other laptops this has worked out of the box without problems.

- What is the slimbook Preferences menu options "Show indicator",  "Check Notifications", "Trackpad lock", "Set power profile" do?

- Left control key (+arrows) doesn't jump to next word. How could I activate this behavior? On my previous computer I remember tweaking this using some tutorial, but I cannot find it again, any pointers would be appreciated.

- How is the shell configured on this OS? The 647 lines on `/usr/share/slimbook-console/trueline.sh` have very few comments (but I see you use shellcheck :), any guidance on how to tweak it would be helpful

Many thanks. Apologies for asking many questions feel free to answer some of them any help would make my experience

Good morning,

We are aware that the option to disable or enable the docking from settings is bugged, currently one way to mitigate this is to remove the dock extension from Extension Manager, reenabling this extension will bring back the original taskbar

For some Function Keys functions to work properly, you need to have both slimbook-service and slimbook-qc71-dkms and the linux kernel headers for your kernel version, make sure you have those installed

There's an option for enabling and disabling the SUPER key, which is by using Fn+F2

Even though the keyboard layout preview doesn't show the ctrl keys, SUPER, or Alt keys, it should work out of the box

As for the Preferences menu in Slimbook Service, the `Show Indicator` option shows or hides the icon in the tray (might need a restart/log out to make effect), the `Check Notifications` option enables or disables getting notifications from Slimbook for your device (so, EC and BIOS  udpates, or similar type of notifications), the `Trackpad Lock` does exactly what the name says, enables or disables the function of Fn+F6 to toggle the touchpad, and `Set power profile` makes GNOME's Power Profile to sync with Fn+F5's performance modes.

For the jump to next word question, in which application are you trying to do so? I tried in several and works properly, maybe it is something of the application instead.

The trueline script is brought as is from the original repo: https://github.com/petobens/trueline , its README has quite some information in customising it.

Regards,

I'll learn how to use the input-remapper as it is not obvious how it works and on my external keyboard I don't have that problem.

Locking is an step to avoid someone access or manage the computer without suspending the computer. In windows is Windows key +L. It doesn't involve any power change, just locking the user (and depending on the configuration preventing other users to use the machine)

I don't see any error message on the Ubuntu Dock and I won't be chasing the logs for it as the left control issue is fixed with the external keyboard (unless you really want it to fix it when installing it in other computers).

I had the following files: qc71_laptop.ko.zst and yt6801.ko.zst (I'll update after the rebooting if the reconfiguration made it work).

Good morning,

There's currently a bug with Right Ctrl behaviour, you can remap it with input-remapper GUI application, you'll need to select AT translated Set 2 Keyboard and make a new preset, then you can record your input (so right ctrl), to `KEY_RIGHTCTRL`, this should make it work properly.

The Power profile should show in the Power Mode section of the GNOME settings and quick accesses to ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth options in the upper dock

Locking the device as in suspending? That's Fn + F1's function

Which errors show for the Ubuntu Dock? Yes, disabling the extension "Dash to Panel" removes to task bar and moves the bar to the left (or however it is configured in your settings)

Is the slimbook-qc71-dkms driver loaded? You can check in lsmod, if it's not loaded you could try to reconfigure `slimbook-qc71-dkms` with dpkg-reconfigure -a and check if in the next boot is loaded
You can also check `/lib/modules/$(uname -r)/updates/dkms/ folder to see if the drivers themselves are there

Hi Samanta many thanks for your fast assistance.

> We are aware that the option to disable or enable the docking from settings is bugged, currently one way to mitigate this is to remove the dock extension from Extension Manager, reenabling this extension will bring back the original taskbar

I think the problem is with Dash to Panel. Disabling it moved one dock to the top (permanently fixed). But the Ubuntu Dock  reports there is an error while loading that extension.

> For some Function Keys functions to work properly, you need to have both slimbook-service and slimbook-qc71-dkms and the linux kernel headers for your kernel version, make sure you have those installed

I have both of them already installed and the linux-headers-6.17.0-1005-oem already installed (as per my uname -r) but still the ones I posted initially don't work.

> There's an option for enabling and disabling the SUPER key, which is by using Fn+F2

Then how do I lock the computer?

> Even though the keyboard layout preview doesn't show the ctrl keys, SUPER, or Alt keys, it should work out of the box

The SUPER key works again after the Fn+F2, maybe I had disabled them as now works.

I had to enable the trackpad lock for the FN+F6 to work. But enabling the Set power profile option didn't made the Fn+F5 combination display anything.

My mistake, I meant the right control button. I'm testing on the terminal, vim and on gedit. But I remember tweaking those setting several years ago. I was just wondering if there was now an easier way

Will do, it looks nice an easy.
